จากช่วงก่อนหน้านี้ที่มีเรื่องพันธมิตรบุกยึดทำเนียบ ลองทำ Thai political updates ไปใส่ในเว็บดูแล้วก็มีคนสนใจระดับหนึ่ง คราวนี้ใกล้ช่วงโค้งสุดท้ายของการหาเสียงเลือกตั้งผู้ว่า กทม. แล้ว ก็เลยลองทำอีกเวอร์ชันออกมาดู

หน้าตาไม่ค่อยสวยเลย

Once again I have to build up a machine for OpenVPN. I have previously wrote articles about this but when I follow those instruction it still does not work. But first, let us talk about what I want to achieved. I just simply want to set up a road warrior configuration, i.e., I would like to have a machine, from any place, to securely access all the resource within our laboratory. This is not possible via public interface because the firewall rules block most of the port. Besides, it is not secure.

Now, the generic howto of OpenVPN will lead you to the point that you have the VPN connection between the client and the server, but no other machine on the client side or the server side is accessible by both side. My previous article tell you how to set up the routing on the client such that when it wish to connect to the other machine in the office, it should be routed through OpenVPN. This seems to work so far for my last machine but actually it does not on the new machine.

The problem is that

1. I have to enable port forwarding on the server. This is already covered in OpenVPN howto here.

Specifically for ubuntu, you have to execute the following command.

$echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

This is to tell the kernel to allow routing, now. However, this does not survive a reboot. For ubuntu, you have to add the following file to /etc/sysctl.conf

net.ipv4.ip_forward=1

1. I also need to enable NAT on the server, for WinXP, this is not actually needed, but for my latest ubuntu machine, I have to execute the following command.

iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE

And that is enough.

เห็น Windows Live Messenger 9 Beta เพิ่งออกมาสดๆ ร้อนๆ เลยดาวน์โหลดของใหม่มาลองซะหน่อย ปรากฏว่าพอรันตัว wlsetup-web.exe ก็เจอข้อความต้อนรับแบบนี้

อย่างแรกที่คิดในใจคือ “มันแปลว่าอะไรฟระ” =.=

ลองโหลดตัว setup แบบ full มา ปรากฏว่าพอรันแล้วก็ขึ้น error แบบเดียวกัน ในที่สุดก็ต้องใช้ไม้ตายแบบเดิมๆ คือ “อะไรๆ ก็กู… (เกิล)”

ได้ความว่าอาจเกิดจากไฟล์ softpub.dll ยังไม่ถูก register ในระบบ วิธีแก้คือไปที่ Start > Run… พิมพ์ regsvr32 softpub.dll แล้วกด Enter

ถ้าทำถูกต้อง มันจะมี dialog box ขึ้นมาประมาณนี้

จากนั้นลองรันตัว wlsetup-web.exe (หรือ wlsetup-all.exe) ก็จะสามารถเข้าสู่หน้าจอติดตั้งได้ตามปกติ

One of my key requirements for a phone is that it must be able to set an alarm based on specific day of week. For example, I should be able to set up an alarm such that it reminds me at 15:50 on every workday (Mon. — Fri.). The reason behind this is that in the period of last several years, I spent most of my time at Chulalongkorn University which forbid me to park a car inside the campus. This is understandable because the space is very limited. The alternative choice would be that I have to park at roadside. Now, officially, the parking is available only from 9:00 till 16:00 and the law enforcer are quite active and punctual in the recent years. The result is that I have to move my car away before 16:00. Now, university understand this quite well and permit non-faculty car to park inside the campus after 16:00. So, the job of almost all students at 16:00 are that they have to relocate their car to the campus. Due to the nature of the work, we, the Ph.D. student, are quite obsessed with the work such that we usually forgot to move the car. This result in a ticket with 200-400 baht fine.

That is why alarm clock is a must. However, on sat and sun, we can park the car inside the campus for the entire day because most faculty members are not there. Thus, I would like to turn the alarm off. This also applies to the wake up alarm.

It turns out that there day-customizable alarm feature is not available in a cheap phone I were trying to buy, thus I have to pay extra money for that.

Now, my need is gone. Since I was employed as a faculty member, I am entitled for a parking sticker. Today, I drove pass the security at the entrance and I finally realized I no longer need the alarm now. I simply turned it off and suddenly feel a satisfaction that, finally, after all these years, I no longer have to worry about my parking space at all.

ว่ากันในเชิงเทคนิค HTML+CSS แล้ว การทำขอบโค้งให้ใช้ได้กับทุก browser นั้นเป็นเรื่องวุ่นวาย แต่ถ้าทำให้ขอบโค้งแค่เฉพาะใน Firefox, Safari หรือ Chrome นั้นง่ายนิดเดียว เพียงแค่ใส่ CSS เข้าไปแค่นี้

เพราะว่ามันง่ายแบบนี้ ระยะหลังถึงได้มีนักพัฒนาหลายเจ้าที่ยอม ปล่อยให้คนที่ใช้ IE กลายเป็นประชากรชั้นสอง ที่ได้ใช้งานเว็บแบบหน้าตาไม่สวยแทน อย่างที่ยกมาให้ดูข้างต้น

อย่างไรก็ตาม อย่างน้อยเว็บพวกนี้ก็ยัง “ทำงานได้” บน IE เพียงแต่ว่าไม่สวยนัก ยังดีกว่าเว็บในบ้านเราหลายๆ แห่งที่ “ใช้งานไม่ได้เลย” กับ browser อื่นที่ไม่ใช่ IE

EA retools ‘Spore’ DRM activation features

เพิ่งเคยเซ็ตอัพ VPN บนวินโดวส์เป็นครั้งแรก บอกได้คำเดียวว่าง่ายมากๆ (แต่ปลอดภัยหรือเปล่าไม่รู้เหมือนกัน :P) วิธีการก็ประมาณนี้

ฝั่งเซิร์ฟเวอร์:

1. เปิดหน้าต่าง Network Connections ขึ้นมา
2. เลือก Create a new connection
3. เลือก Setup an advanced connection
4. เลือก Accept incoming connections
5. ตรงที่ให้เลือก Devices for incoming connection ไม่ต้องเลือกอะไร คลิก Next ไปเลย
6. เลือก Allow virtual private connections
7. จากนั้นเลือก user ที่ต้องการให้ล็อกอินเข้ามาใช้งานได้
8. ไฮไลต์ที่ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) แล้วคลิกปุ่ม Properties
9. เลือกว่าจะให้ assign IP อัตโนมัติ หรือกำหนด range ของ IP หรือจะให้ฝั่งไคลเอนต์เป็นคนกำหนด IP เอง
10. คลิก Next แล้วคลิก Finish เป็นอันเสร็จพิธี

ฝั่งไคลเอนต์:

1. เปิดหน้าต่าง Network Connections ขึ้นมา
2. เลือก Create a new connection
3. เลือก Connect to the network at my workplace
4. เลือก Virtual Private Network connection
5. ตั้งชื่อ connection อันนี้แล้วแต่รสนิยมของใครของมัน
6. เลือก Do not dial the initial connection
7. ใส่ hostname หรือ IP address ของเครื่องเซิร์ฟเวอร์
8. คลิก Next แล้วคลิก Finish เป็นอันเสร็จพิธีเช่นกัน

เวลาจะต่อ VPN ก็ดับเบิลคลิก connection ที่เราสร้างขึ้นมา มันจะมี dialog ให้ใส่ username/password เสร็จแล้วก็คลิก Connect เหมือนเวลาต่อเน็ตด้วยโมเด็มยังไงยังงั้น

Today is my first chance to lecture for an ICE students (the international course). It turned out to be a very good one!!! Much better than I expected, the students were very involved with the class. They responded to most of my questions. They were willing to come in front of the class and did some assignment I placed upon them. To the very most of my surprise, they even ask that I should keep teaching well beyond the end of the class.

These are more than I hoped for. Well, my dear students, if by any chance you are reading this article, I would like to share with you that I am very happy with this class and I am looking forward to any another chance that we might meet again.

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a way to protecting digitally product such as Music ( which can be ripped to MP3), Movies ( DVD,VCD which can be ripped to DivX or whatever encoding type.. ) and of course what I’m talking about here, a Game.

We know, back in the day, both music and movie industry applied DRM to their product and fail miserably because customer just rejected the idea, and thus rejected the DRM product. I can remember the DRM CD gone from shelf within blink of an eyes.

The industrial leading company come up with another fight by putting DRM MP3 online … for customer to purchase .. ( via Amazon, iTune … etc). People are getting anxiety they can’t move the song to another computer or music device (iPod , for example). And recently the online music store anounced they are leaving DRM to NON-DRM online music store. OK, round two come to an end.

Now , SPORE , the game everyone should praise about, is going deep into hell. The game is sold with the restriction that

YOU CAN ONLY ACTIVATE THE GAME 3 TIMES.

After that, everytime you install and want to go online, you need to call EA (distributor) to get permission. OK, you should get the idea how customer will react. Amazon customer gave 1.5 star out of 5 (Based on 2400+ reviewer) . I can only shake my head.

This is one example of a review

First of all, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you’ll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That’s not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief.

This basically means that you are actually RENTING the game, instead of owning it. The game WILL stop to function in the future.

And one game flaw is also addressed very precise ..

Second, the game was dumbed down to oblivion. Evolution doesn’t even matter anymore. For example, you can add as many legs to a creature as you want, but the multi-legged creature won’t be any faster than a single-legged one with higher leg stats. This gameplay element makes “creating” your creatures entirely pointless (cosmetic only, because everything is based on stats), and brings you about the same amount of excitement as dressing up a plastic doll.

Oh yes .. I cound’t agree more ! How can a single-legged man can compete running with a dog ? or a 1 year old baby that just started to be able to walk on his foot?

I love the game , but honestly I think there are ways to improve.
I hope Maxis (creator) and EA learn something from customer opinion. And actually DO something about it.

Today I have just signed a contract with Dept. of Computer Engineering. Now, I am officially a full time lecturer at Chulalongkorn University. My former adviser came and said to me that he once heard a following quote.

You are considered being successful in your academic career when your grand student got her Ph.D.

And he said that he is going to email to his adviser (Jean Ponce) that, by the above standard, he should be happy now and once my first Ph.D. student graduates, my adviser will consider himself being a successful teacher. Well, it is a long way until my grand student got her Ph.D.

I went to some team building seminar last week. Then this game, every one gets one word card.
The purpose is to match up with another word, for whatever reason.. And I got this word ..หอย… 

Dam…  few people try to connect the word w/ mine. e.g.
หอย-จมูก  … organs? … no! (><)
หอย-น้องสาว … erm… ?   no!
หอย- ผมยุ่ง  … no pretty nae’ nae’ ( - -”)

Finally, I got this ’islander’ to match w/ my ‘หอย’ . phew~  (^^)

Apple เพิ่งปล่อย iTunes 8 ออกมา พร้อมความสามารถใหม่ที่ชื่อว่า “Genius” ประมาณว่าสามารถแนะนำเพลงที่เหมาะสมกับเราให้ได้เอง โดยอาศัยจากข้อมูลคนใช้ iTunes ทั่วโลก (มาแนวเดียวกับ Last.fm / Pandora)

Interface ใหม่แบบ Grid view สามารถเลือก group ตาม Artist ได้ด้วย สะดวกดี แต่มันดันออกมาสีดำ ไม่ค่อยเข้ากับ UI ส่วนอื่นเท่าไหร่

การใช้ความสามารถ Genius ของ iTunes 8 ทำได้โดยกดปุ่ม genius ที่มุมขวาล่าง จากนั้น iTunes จะเลือกเอาเพลงใน Library ของเราที่มีความใกล้เคียงกับเพลงที่เราเลือกอยู่ตอนนั้น มาทำเป็น playlist ให้ ซึ่งก็จะเหมาะกับคนที่มี Library ขนาดใหญ่สักหน่อย ส่วนความฉลาดนั้นก็อยู่ในระดับที่ใช้ได้

Playlist ที่ใกล้เคียงกับเพลง Highway Star ของ Deep Purple

ทดสอบกับ Auto Rock ของ Mogwai ถือว่าผลการค้นหาออกมาใช้ได้ทีเดียว

แต่ถ้าใช้กับเพลงไทยก็จะเจอกับอะไรแบบนี้

ปิดท้ายด้วย Visualizer ตัวใหม่ที่ชื่อ Magnetosphere

สวยดี แต่ปกติก็ไม่ได้ใช้

เอาจริงๆ แล้วผมว่า iTunes เป็นโปรแกรมที่ “bloat” มากๆ ยัดฟีเจอร์อะไรไม่รู้มากมายใส่เอาไว้จนมันหนัก อ้วนเทอะทะ ถ้าให้เลือกได้ อยากใช้โปรแกรมเล็กๆ เบาๆ มากกว่า แต่บน Mac นี่เหมือนจะยังไม่มีตัวเลือกอื่นมากนัก เคยลอง songbird ดูแล้วก็ยังไม่ค่อยถูกใจเท่าไหร่ ก็ต้องทำใจใช้ต่อไป

แต่นั่นคือกับศัตรู วันนี้ประเทศจะแพ้ พันธมิตรก็ไม่ชนะ
คนหัวเราะกับชัยชนะบนความล้มเหลวของไทยอยู่ห่างจากประเทศไทยไปหลายหมื่นกิโลเมตร โน่น ณ ลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ

ผมมีข้อเสนอสำหรับพันธมิตร ในการทำให้คุณได้ชัยชนะอย่างถาวร
1.ให้กระบวนการทางศาลทำหน้าที่ของเขาไป นักการเมือง โกงกินชาติ ต้องถูกกำจัดโดยกระบวนการภายใต้กฏหมายเท่านั้น
2.ประเทศไทยปัจจุบัน ประสบปัญหาภัยธรรมชาติ และ วิกฤติต่างๆ เป็นจำนวนมาก พันธมิตรในฐานะผู้นำทางจิตวิญญาณ ควรจะมีบทบาทในการส่งคนไปเป็นแนวร่วมในการช่วยเหลือคนหรือสังคมเหล่านี้หรือไม่? เพื่อสร้างสัมพันธภาพที่ดีกับชุมชนและถ่ายทอดความรู้ที่ถูกต้อง ซึ่งจะเป็นการสร้างพื้นฐานจริยธรรมที่ดีให้แก่ประชาชนในระยะยาว ดีกว่าหรือไม่กับการเพียงแค่มานั่งฟังปราศรัย ประเทศยังมีคนที่เดือดร้อน และ ต้องการความรู้อีกเยอะ อย่างน้อยก็มากกว่าผู้ชุมนุม นาทีนี้หลายเท่า เราต้องการให้ท่านไปถ่ายทอดให้คนรู้ ไปช่วยเหลือฝู้อื่นด้วย
3.ยกเลิกกำลัง และนักรบต่างๆ การต่อสู้อย่างอหิงสา ไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้กำลัง
4.อย่าใช้โวหาร หรือ ช่องว่างทางนิติศาสตร์ เพราะคนดีจริงไม่เคยอ้างกฎหมายเป็นเครื่องมือ แต่ใช้จริยธรรมและความรับผิดชอบเป็นเข็มทิศ
อย่าลืมว่าหนึ่งในการเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์การปกครองของมนุษย์ชาติ คือการใช้วิธี long march ของพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีน
